“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer”
This is a call to Christ-like character and godly temperament amid the harsh realities of life, and is achieved, not by trying harder to be better, but by reliance on the Holy Spirit, and being clear about the reasons why living up to such a standard is so important.
The call to be joyful in hope
Every Christian is called to face the future full of joy and hope and expectancy. The reasons for living up to such a standard are to be found in Romans 1-8. Because of the security of our position and inheritance in Christ, we have every reason to be full of joy and hope amidst the ups and downs of life
The call to be patient in affliction
Every follower of Jesus is called upon to endure affliction patiently. The Gospel truths that require us to do so are stated clearly in Romans 1-8. Because God is sovereign in human suffering, we are not to seek to short circuit pain and heartache, but patiently endure it and seek the good God has purposed for us by it.
The call to faithfulness in prayer
Every follower of Jesus is called upon to be faithful in prayer. There is nothing more Christ-like than this. The Gospel truths that require this of us are stated clearly in Romans 1-8. God’s plans are accomplished and His promises are fulfilled in our life and experience when we faithfully pray.
